The Channel Islands are a group of Islands of the coast of Normandy, France, in the English Channel. The Channel Islands have two Bailiwicks: The Bailiwick of Jersey to the south of the group with its capital at St. Helier and the Bailiwick of Guernsey to the north with it capital at St. Peter Port. The Bailiwick of Jersey has a population of around 28,000 and the population of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is smaller at around 16,500. Guernsey also includes the islands of Sark, Alderney and Herm. There are many smaller uninhabited islands as well. The Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey have been administered separately since the 13th century. They were annexed by the Duchy of Normandy in 933 and have remained an English Crown Dependency ever since. The Channel Islands are a separate autonomous part of the United Kingdom. The islands have many hotels and bed and breakfast properties available. St Helier and St. Peter Port in particular have many fine hotels but bed and breakfast accommodation and campsites can be found in all areas of Jersey and Guernsey. St Helier and St Peter Port are both ports and have facilities for boats and water activities. The smaller islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney have fewer facilities but are places of rugged beauty and well worth visiting. Sark is the smallest of the main islands, just 3 miles long and one and a half miles wide, it allows no motor vehicles. Alderney has its own government and is just three and a half miles long by one and a half miles wide. Herm is a mile and a half long and half a mile wide and has no cars. Hotels are available on all three of the smaller islands.
