Scotland occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain and is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom. Scotland was an independent kingdom until 1707, when the Acts of Union resulted in its union with the England to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. Apart from the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands divided into four main groups: Shetland, Orkney, and the Inner Hebrides and Outer Hebrides. The capital is Edinburgh and its largest city is Glasgow, which is home to 40% of the population. It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. To the south, Scotland’s only land border is with England and runs for sixty miles. Geographically Scotland has three parts, the Southern Upland running almost 125 miles, the Central Lowlands which is a huge rift valley and to the north, the Highlands, which contains the highest mountain on the British Isles, Ben Nevis at 4,409 feet. There are numerous bodies of freshwater known as Lochs including Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, home to the famous Loch Ness monster. The scenery is stunningly beautiful and unspoilt over most of the country.
