The Yorkshire and Humber region of England covers most of historic Yorkshire and that part of Lincolnshire that was formerly included in old county of Humberside. It is situated in the north east of England. This vast area covers 8 counties and unitary authorities and 16 districts. York is the main city in Yorkshire and Humber region and the cathedral, York Minster, is one of the oldest and largest in England The Yorkshire and Humber region was once famous for its coal mining, mainly in South Yorkshire and the steel and engineering factories that went with them. But many coal pits closed in the 1990’s and only a handful of coal mines remain in the Pontrefact area. The scars formed by the coal mining are being greened over and the former industrial cities are cleaner and prosperous. The counties and unitary authorities that form the region are North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Northeast Lincolnshire, Kingston Upon Hull and York.
